Problem: Trying to cut down how much I swear in text messages, and find other words to use when I'm mad
Data: I took the amount of times I texted typical swear words and counted them all. I also decided to add in the context they were said, and how I was feeling that day.
Design: I will be putting them into a calendar like graphic and probably using emoticons for the emotions.
I was influenced by the style and how this graph showed change over time.
For this graph I liked how they took a different approach to a typical calendar and the days of the year that were of importance. The circle was really a great way of showing that these same holiday's occur every year.
I found this to be a good display of the emoticons, not too distracting and relevant to the information.
These two infographics were designed is similar to how I want my graphic to look. The second one was more of the color scheme that I would like to use and the first one I enjoyed how the illustrations were included in the piece to evoke emotion.

Your idea is similar to Erica's, so it will be interesting to see the final product of these. My suggestion would be to consider the first graph, you could list out all the words you use and draw around to the different times you were in a good or bad mood.
ReplyDeleteI would consider steering clear of the calendar approach on this one. I feel like having some kind of comparative imagery or design would be most effective here to evoke emotion.
ReplyDeleteI'd watch how you go about displaying these curse words. This idea walks a fine line between someone looking at it and finding it humorous and someone finding it really inappropriate. You mentioned talking about specific words, that's the only thing that made me think of this. Other then that it's an interesting idea!
ReplyDeletei agree with all these comments but i thought about the swear words being listed as well. Maybe instead of writing the actual words written you could show how many swear words were used. i think including each word will make it either inappropriate or humorous like Erin said.
DeleteMaybe instead of using the specific curse words, you could use the emoticons to symbolize them. or you could use the symbols to replace some of the letters in the words. You don't want it to be offensive.
DeleteIt's a good idea to incorporate your mood into the concept. It will be interesting to see what kind of mood you were in when you swore the most or when you swore the least.
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by you concept but wary of the calendar like graphic idea you have. Also, I want to caution you about cruse words. They can be used in various emotions and if you use a set emoticon for a specific curse word that is being used with different emotions you will end up with a big problem.
ReplyDeleteI think this is such a finny idea. I like how you are going to include how you were feeling when you texted the swear word. This makes it interesting because it will allow us to see whether or not there is a correlation between the two.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be fine to incorporate the actual swear words into your work. It's the basis of the idea for the project, so I think they have to be used in some way. Also, some art is offensive, people just have to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteBut I am also not sure about the calendar idea. The idea for the project doesn't really have a time component to it, in my opinion.
I like this and also think that if you want to list the swear words, go for it. This graphic obviously isn't going to be hanging in an elementary school and is for a mature audience, so there's no need to censor yourself. The calender like graphic doesn't sound like a bad idea and I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I think you have a good thing here. I don't think most of us realize how much we swear or don't really care to realize it. It seems like you have some good resources to suit your data also.
ReplyDeleteYour topic is unique and I like your idea. I calender-like format would be a suitable style. It would be also neat if you had a cell-phone and branching out of the screen came out the calender. Your influences follow very well with the style you chose.
ReplyDeleteYou've definitely picked five really good examples to help your design. It's a great subject matter and can really be done a number of ways!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really funny idea! I read the previous comments, and I see where some people are coming from by saying it could be taken as inappropriate but there is really no way to get around adding the swear words. Obviously you are taking a humorous approach to the assignment and that will be reflected in the outcome so I wouldn't worry too much about the swear words. You could consider "censoring" them somewhat, like using sh*t. I also dont really understand the emoticons as much because there are many different contexts for most swear words. Good luck! Cant wait to see the results!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great idea i feel like i swear so much when i text as well it would be intersting to see how much i actually do. I think you should try to censor the words because if your trying not to curse and limit the amount you do this would be a funny way to do it.
